5 Inputs of Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Focus: Find a subject that interests you, focus in on it and then figure out how to position yourself accordingly, in order to step into that field. Those who have focus, do not waste precious time on subject matter that is not relevant. My tip here is to do your homework by researching different job positions, qualifications and responsibilities to get a strong handle on relevancy to what you want to accomplish. If you are passionate about creating custom graphics, then maybe try your hand at advertising. Focus is what will help drive you! Luck: To me luck is a wild card because fortune may change all other successful inputs accordingly. You could have the most determination in the world, focus on your goals and work hard, but if your company acquired, then you might lose out. Luck is something that cannot be changed or manipulated, but if you are lucky, the doors may open to new opportunities. Hard-work: If you work hard, it shows in the quality of the end deliverable. Working hard is a characteristic of any successful entrepreneur. If you are not willing to work hard, then it is actually considered an impediment to your success and a competitive disadvantage. If you arent working hard, others will be working hard, so they will climb the corporate hierarchy while you remain stationary. Remember you get out of life what you put in. Determination: Determination is the driver to make someone work hard and the force is very strong. If you are determined, you will not let any obstacle force you to quit and in doing so, you will be successful. On the downside, this attribute may make you go crazy, which is certainly not healthy to your lives. Find something inside you where you can get this characteristic and ignite it. Timing: Timing correlates almost directly with luck, in that if you have superior timing, the right positions or opportunities will clear and allow you to seize them. The difference between timing and luck is that you have the inborn ability to control timing. I say this because you can get your work out to your boss at the right time and manipulate the system. Volunteering - Is It Any Good In this post, I will introduce you to an industry that does not require you to have a specific degree, or the competitiveness for grades. What it does require though, is a tough individual who wants to gain some valuable skills, as well as make a difference to society. Why does one have to be tough? Add to the previous sentence that you wonât be paid for initial work. Yes, I am talking about Volunteering, a £21 billion industry in the UK, set to expand even more. Why Volunteer? Did You Do Volunteering? I will be honest: I wasnât a fan of the concept of Volunteering, until last year. However, ever since I did a year in industry placement, I realised that, in some aspects, I was âluckyâ to get a placement, whilst others didnât. It was then that I decided to work for students, in some capacity, to get more experience and knowledge that would help them. I felt the only way to do this was in a voluntary capacity. I started off with setting up a RateMyPlacement Facebook page for the University of Leicester and aggregating internships on offer. I then offered my services to the Students Union as a Student Trustee, where a lot of work still needs to be done. Whilst in my final year, I also started blogging for my University in a voluntary capacity, and since then have gone on to start Career Geek Blog, which has other team members volunteering to blog and run the blog! Why Volunteer? All the above mentioned voluntary posts I have held are not paid, they are completely voluntary, and may be seen as slightly unorthodox options, I have to admit, but I enjoy(ed) all of them. Now you may ask, why? Well, firstly, because all three of them added some value to my CV, and being voluntary positions, they added a different dimension to my CV that employers could spot. I donât think itâs necessarily the fact that you have worked without pay that impresses, but that you have gained valuable skills outside academia. Yes, you could be working part-time as well, but as I said earlier, I think it adds a different dimension to your experiences. Additionally, employers will see that you can work with different teams for short periods, and adapt quickly to fit in with the new work dynamics. The second reason to volunteer is to genuinely make a difference to society, or to your local community. This blog itself is an example of volunteering satisfaction. We run this blog on a completely voluntary basis. And personally, knowing that the blog is being read by students and graduates, and may be helping some, genuinely makes it all worthwhile. Want to Volunteer? So, if youâve never considered volunteering and all the benefits it offers, have a think about it again. Itâs definitely given me a lot and my volunteering experience has been pretty enjoyable so far. Every university has some volunteering society that you can be part of, and give some of your time to. At the same time, there are many opportunities that you can take advantage of online, such as Do-it organisation, and many others. To find a path for your career embrace instability The old paths through adult life dont work anymore. Graduate school is no longer a ticket to a stable career, and in some cases, its not even a ticket to a job. Student debt weighs so heavy today that people should not expect to have what their parents have. Technology opens up many types of new types of unstable careers, but slams the door on many stable ones. Workers today will have no fewer than three careers in their lives, and they will change jobs frequently when young. After that, they will cut back when they have kids, ramp up when they need money, and switch when their learning curve flattens. The good news is that a large consensus of experts say in todays world, this kind of living will not necessarily hurt your career. And in fact, changing positions frequently makes you a better candidate in many circumstances. Jason Davis, blogger at Recruiting.com says, If a candidate has been at the same company for 10 years or more, you should take a red marker [to the resume], draw a big x through it, and throw it in the garbage. Todays worker focuses on finding positionsall the timethat are fulfilling, engaging, and accommodating of personal time. Its a nice picture, but its hard to imagine its a stable life. And, for the most part, people do not like instability. Even the people who youd think would be risk takers, entrepreneurs, are not, really. Most people are thinking of ways to mitigate the risks they are taking, according to Saras Sarasvathy, of the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. So what can people do today to mitigate risk in the face of an inherently high-risk workplace? Get good at dealing with transition, because todays workplace is full of it. The people who are most adept at dealing with transition are the people who will do best in their career and in their life. 1. Have two jobs at the same time. The easiest way to make a transition is to do it slowly. The old way to change careers is to quit one, leave everything behind, and start everything over new. This is extremely difficult, and extremely risky. An easier transition is to start a new career while youre doing the old one. In some cases, you will end up doing the new career most of the time, in some cases, you will find out you dont like the new idea and youll try something else. Recently, though, some people find they like doing both. Two careers makes sense to a lot of people, especially if one is fulfilling and the other pays the bills. Or one is very unstable and one is stable. Marci Alboher describes the nuts and bolts of having two careers in a way that works in her new book, One Person/Multiple Careers: A New Model for Work/Life Success. She moves between her own set of careers as author/lecturer/writing coach as she tells a wide variety of stories of how people maintain multiple careers successfully. It used to be that the only way to transition was to leave your prior career behind. Todays strivers are learning how to take what comes before and overlay new experiences on top of that. Today a career can be a mosaic. Alboher shows this is a path people can use to not only create more stability as they change, but also to follow their dreams as theyre going. 2. Be comfortable with uncertainty. Eve Ensler, author of the play The Vagina Monologues and also, more recently, the book Insecure at Last:Losing It in Our Security-Obsessed World, thinks one cause of insecurity in our lives is the expectation of being secure. If you think youll get to the point that youll be secure, then youll be chronically depressed, says Ensler. Since we can never really be secure, we should instead learn to be comfortable with that. Getting good at dealing with a world that does not provide security is actually a more healthy way to live than trying to find that one, perfect path through life that leads to a mythical security. Enslers ideas suggest that todays career paths, that wind and stop and turn and surprise us along the way, may be better for us once we get used to not knowing whats ahead. When you start working with ambiguity and living with it initially, its scary because there are no signposts. But eventually it seems to be a much more interesting way of living. 3. Take time to explore. It used to be people started exploring when they turned 40, and we called it a mid-life crisis. It seems clear, now, that exploration and self-discovery is something to do throughout life, not just when you get sick of your mortgage or your marriage. But this process requires we take time to check in with ourselves during transition times. Jumping quickly from one thing to another is not as effective as taking time to figure out how youre feeling, and what you enjoy, each step of the way. Mike Marriner was planning to go to medical school but realized he wasnt passionate about biology. He decided to take time to figure out what he should do next. During this process, he started Roadtrip Nation, which sends teams of students around the country to interview people about their lives and careers. The idea is to provide inspiration or cautions for people as they consider making a transition. Today there is no transition period, says Marriner. Everything is very quick and we are trying to put the spirit of exploration back into American culture. Roadtrip Nation has become a book, a summer program for college students, and a PBS Series, all addressing the idea that transition is serious business, and part of moving into adult life is getting good at figuring out where to go next. To many people, the continuously shifting workplace is disorienting and discouraging, but really, you just need to reorient yourself and develop personal tools for a new workplace. Transition is an opportunity, and today life is full of more opportunity than ever before.
